When you are looking at building a pond it is important to create a shoreline that looks natural. Place your rocks and stones in a very natural way as to make the pond visually appealing and not artificial looking. This is particularly important when dealing with rocks and stones with strata lines. Strata lines are the visible layers within the rock or stone. The strata lines should run horizontally to the pond, not vertically. To create a very natural looking pond with this type of edging rock have the rocks partially submersed with the strata lines exposed above the water line. Strata lines should be visible from looking across the water, not from above. When placing these rocks along a sloping edge, make sure that the lines are level and not following the slope of the feature or stream.
If you are edging the pond with stones or rocks to conceal the existing pond liner, first line the pond liner with underlay then place your rocks so you will protect the pond liner from tearing or becoming punctured. When placing absorbent rock (i.e. sand stone) you can enhance the weathered look of the rock by placing them in an overlapping position. Non-absorbent rock (i.e. granite) that have very jagged and rugged planes rather than distinct strata lines look more natural bordering a pond when they are acutely angled and not placed snugly against each other.
Take a look at some natural shore lines and you will get an understanding of shore lines in a completely natural setting. Then take your new found knowledge and integrate it into your pond construction and create an edging that will look as natural as if your pond was always there.
