If you are planning to light a large water garden or feature you will most likely use lighting that requires standard voltages. It is very important that all electrical systems used for landscaping purposes have a circuit breaker and are protected with a GFI plug (ground fault interrupter). These safety features will cut the power to the pond if there is any problem.
It is important that all the equipment and supplies used for lighting an outdoor pond are rated for outdoor use. A sealed cable must be used to connect the lights to the main power supply cable with a water proof connector. Any cable that needs to be concealed underground should be buried at least 1.5 feet deep. The cable that connects the lights to the main outlet should be run through electrical conduit underground. In addition it is wise to lay roofing tiles on top of the conduit in the trench with bright warnings before the trench is buried as to add additional safety for anyone who may dig in the future. It is best that you have a qualified electrician install and design the electrical wiring for a standard 120 volt system.
A low voltage system can also be purchased and easily installed safely. A transformer can be easily adapted and added outside the pond to the system to reduce the voltage for a pump and light kit that is designed for lower voltage. A low voltage light and pond kit can be a great option for you to have a well lit pond fountain. The pump and lights are attached in one unit and all the power cables in the unit merge into one cable that will run to your low voltage transformer.
Lights can add a new and mystic look to your pond, fountain or water feature, but be careful when you plan to bring electricity to the water. It is more important that everything be done safely and correctly rather than saving a few dollars and time by making short cuts.
Special Note and Disclaimer: I suggest contacting your local authorities to confirm all local regulations regarding wiring. I am not an electrician and recommend that you seek professional advice before you start any electrical projects.
