Should I Build My Pond in the Sun or Shade

I am very new to all this and I'm glad I found this site.  I am in the process of choosing a location to build my pond, do I want to build it the sun or in the shade?  What are the pros and cons of each, or does it even matter?  Thanks for the help!

Re: Sun or Shade

Terri,

Your best bet is partial sun/shade.  You want enough sun for plants, etc, however don't want the water getting too warm, especially if you have fish in the pond.  Ideally you should get 6 hours of direct sun.  If you are getting shade, is it because of trees?  If so, you will need to concern yourself with leaves in the fall.  Leaves can ruin your pond chemistry.

Too much shade will not allow plants to grow to their potential.   Also, the water may not reach a warm temperature, depending on your climate.  Another thing to consider is your depth.  If you go 24" or more, you will be able to have a little bit of a thermal barrier for fish.
