Do you like mushrooms on your pepperoni pizza? It’s a personal preference, but we all know that pickles don’t belong on any pizza.
In the title I have made reference to comparing a water garden or backyard pond to my favorite party food, pizza. One of the great things with pizza is that you can serve it to almost any crowd and people will eat and enjoy. It’s an almost guaranteed hit. I liken that to a water feature. Most people are drawn to the sights and sounds of water. It’s soothing, inviting and draws us in. Most people plan vacations around water because has a unique draw. Just as I associate pizza to good times, I associate hanging out in well crafted and designed landscapes with good times. Our immediate environment definitely affects our moods and feelings and a correctly landscaped water feature has a calming and celebratory feel.
The design of a pond and waterfall can be as unique as you are. It can be simple and elegant, or they can be complex works of art. Your garden pond’s design and how it fits into your yard’s landscape is very personal - all up to you, however, you will want to take the time to plan each detail of your pond in order to maximize its full enjoyment potential. After all that is what a water feature is all about. It is the start of slowing life down a little as well as making a bold statement to your friends and family.
It is important that a landscape has a consistent flow and blend together. It is important that the décor and landscape of the yard compliments each other and is not in opposition with itself. A properly landscaped yard will flow and blend together drawing the visitor in, creating a unified ambiance. The tough thing about this is some people seem to have the gift and eye to create such a yard and others try, but just can connect the dots. If you have it, great, if you don’t, you may want to get someone else involved that can. Regardless of your personal gifts and abilities I would encourage you to look at pictures of different landscapes and even visit a variety of parks and communities that will expose you to many ideas.
Keep in mind there are many great options to top a pizza with, but there are definitely others that just were never meant to be. The same is said with your landscape; something will work while others will just turn everybody off. Take the time and do the home work to create a winner.
For anyone considering building a pond for the first time I strongly suggest using an easy to use a diy professional quality pond kit. These kits are essentially a “pond in a box”. They simply decrease the learning curve and helps set a first time builder on the right path to success.
